Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat….

Preparations are in full swing here finally. The man about the place and I slipped out Saturday to do our shopping, leaving the boys behind for the first time on their own. We left them with a list of yard chores which they got done before the rains began, and returned to them cozy in front of the fire finishing a movie. So a good day was had by all.

Sunday was baking day. The middle son and I had planned a huge list of goodies we wanted to try… but the man about the place had been itching for some time to rearrange our space. I know that moving furniture is usually the provenance of the wife.. and in this marriage, it always has been. But at holiday time, when all the relatives are here, our TV space in front of the fire means very little warm sitting room, or if we want to watch a movie all together, not much comfortable seating. So we did a simple switch.

Simple that is, if it had not involved moving heavy furniture and a ton of books. So Sunday the younger boys vaccuumed and hauled books.. the older son helped dad move heavy things, and I directed and helped and handled the delicates and dusted and vacuumed and got everything restored to order.

Now we have a cozy book nook by the fire… and a bigger area for guests and a TV corner.

And we managed all of that along with the baking, thanks to my middle son’s efforts. He made several kinds of cookies yesterday, and I finished off the evening with the family favorite white fruitcake… so unlike the fruitcake that everyone regifts. This is truly yummy!

And as of now, I have a sore throat and the man about the place has a back ache… But we feel happy and content and we are enjoying this holiday.

  1. It’s lovely when you can leave the kids to do some housework, duck out and know that they’ll all still be alive and with the jobs done when you return. I had a morning like that yesterday.

I hope that hat is pre-felted, or else that means that the recipient must have a freakishly large head! merry Christmas!
